EMERGING ARTISTS PROGRAM

Nhasan Studio proudly presents to you a solo video installation by Nguyen Trinh Thi.

This is our first “EMERGING ARTISTS PROGRAM”, which will take place throughout 2010 with six solo exhibitions by Bopha Xorigia Le Huy Hoang, Nguyen Tran Nam, Nguyen Phuon Linh, Lai Dieu Ha, Nguyen Trinh Thi and Nguyen Van Phuc.

These six artists have all worked individually and collaboratively in various projects, such as the “10+” exhibition to celebrate Nhasan studio’s 10th anniversary (2008), the Young Contemporary Art Festival at the Fine Arts University (2007), Saigon Open City (2006)…

Nguyen Trinh Thi is the fourth artist to launch the program, with her exhibition entitled “UNSUBTITLED”.

Ke~ // GAP - solo show by Nguyen Tran Nam. 20/5/2010

Nhasan studio is excited to present Nguyen Tran Nam's site-specific video installation Ke // Gap, the second installment of our 2010 "EMERGING ARTIST PROGRAM".

A Ke is a gap, a crack between closely spaced things, a peephole in a door. The word applies to the microscopic - the delicate space between the veins on a leaf or the crystalline surface of an insect's wing that can fill with light. Ke is also a loophole in the law. Ke ho refers to the ability to navigate the underbelly of society’s rules, slyly weaseling through spaces where laws cannot be enforced. Nguyen Tran Nam summons us, with a quiet deliberation that we pause, peer through the ke, and attempt to slip through into a shadowed, gray terrain.

The work is comprised of a suite of fifteen sculptures. They are part mechanized creature, and part hive made from wire armatures, swathed in string and caked with a mud and paper pulp. Each hive cradles, within its bellied interior, a unique black and white video shown on a continuous loop. The hives grow from beneath the beams, projecting a dim glow in the shadowed corners of Nhasan.

Nguyen Tran Nam has installed his sculptures in the dark places in a room that are often forgotten. His camera lens focuses on the parts of the body that people tend to forget. He gives us a nearly microscopic insect-eye view. The crevice between a thumb and finger, opening and closing slowly. The sleepy bend of an elbow. The lick of a tongue. In these subtle movements we find sex, we find un-muted desire and a new way of seeing. Embedding the digital into an earthen dwelling, Nguyen Tran Nam merges disparate language and place.

Nguyen Tran Nam was born in Hung Yen province in 1979. He moved to Hanoi at the age of seven, and graduated from the Hanoi Fine Arts University in 2003 with a degree in painting. A multi-disciplinary artist working in video, installation, painting and performance, Nam's work has exhibited at the Cadaver Exquisite Video Series during the Contemporary Asian Art Week (New York City, USA), and in Hanoi Link: A Preview (Melbourne, Australia). In Vietnam he held the solo exhibition Indefinitely at Ryllega gallery, and has participated in group shows such as “10+” at Nhasan studio, X-seconds film project at Goethe Institute Hanoi, Three Days - Three Artists at L'espace Hanoi, and Go in the Market at Viet Art Center, Hanoi.

Ke // Gap is the second installation in our "EMERGING ARTIST PROGRAM". A total of six artists, Le Huy Hoang (April 2010), and upcoming, Nguyen Phuong Linh, Lai Thi Dieu Ha, Nguyen Trinh Thi and Nguyen Van Phuc will have solo exhibitions at Nhasan studio over the course of 2010.

3 CHU VI - 3 perimeters

Nhasan Studio hân hạnh giới thiệu một thử nghiệm về trình diễn của ba nghệ sĩ trẻ Nguyễn Huy An, Vũ Đức Toàn và Hoàng Minh Đức. Tác phẩm có tên “Ba chu vi”.


Nghệ thuật trình diễn xuất hiện tại Việt Nam từ đầu thập kỉ 90 với các gương mặt tiên phong như : Trương Tân, Trần Lương, Lê Vũ, Nguyễn Minh Phước… Các tác phẩm thuộc thế hệ này có khuynh hướng phản ánh câu chuyện xã hội, bộc lộ tâm sinh lí trực tiếp, mạnh mẽ, và có tính ứng biến tương tác với khán giả …

Thử nghiệm của ba nghệ sĩ lần này đưa đến một sân khấu hoàn toàn cách biệt với khán giả. Sự gắn kết của "ba hành động độc lập" và việc "không bộc lộ thái độ" của ba nghệ sĩ đưa tới người xem những cảm nhận ẩn dụ hoặc trừu tượng, khơi gợi trí tưởng tượng. Trong một không gian chung với ánh sáng đơn giản và một vài đồ vật tối thiểu, các hành động lặp lại tạo ra 3 chu kì tuần hoàn, 3 nhịp điệu đều đặn. Người xem sẽ từ từ nhìn thấy quá trình thay đổi của chất liệu chung là nước mà cả 3 người đều sử dụng đến.

Các bạn có thể nói chuyện và trao đổi quan niệm trực tiếp với các nghệ sĩ ngay sau trình diễn.
Nhasan mong đợi những hình thức nhiều chiều khác nhau trong nghệ thuật trình diễn. Có thể những lần trình diễn tới tại đây sẽ là những tương tác thử nghiệm với ánh sáng, âm thanh hay video projection hay một thứ gì đó siêu thực hơn thế.

Nhasan Studio cordially invites you to an experimental performance art event, entitled "3 perimeters", collaborated by three young artists Nguyen Huy An, Vu Duc Toan and Hoang Minh Duc.

Performance art emerged in Vietnam in the early 90s, bringing with it a wave of important performance artists, such as: Truong Tan, Tran Luong, Le Vu, Nguyen Minh Phuoc...; and also a number of significant works, whose distinctive characteristics include: the need to reflect a constantly-changing society, the desire to freely express one's self, and the wish to directly interact with audience...

However, it's going to be a totally different experience this time. One which separates artists from audiences. One made up from three separate actions and a shared blank expression. One where the audience will have to trust their instincts and let their imagination take them away. Sharing the same space and using the same prop (water), the three artists will repeat their actions over and over again, turning them into three rhythmic cycles.

After the performance there will be a discussion with the participating artists.

Bopha Xorigia Le Huy Hoang is the first artist to launch the program, with his exhibition entitled “Rain”.



After his solo exhibition “Scarf”, which took place at Nhasan Studio in 2009, Hoang continues to explore and use both natural and industrial materials in this exhibition. In the middle of the exhibition space lays a cabbage garden, which will keep growing throughout the duration of the show. Above it flies a shower of rain, made from thousands and thousands of needles… “I want to portray a sense of contrary. These fragile seeds of life are trying to grow. But how can they grow naturally when there are so many forces trying to alter and stop them?” Hoang explains.



As you walk around the space, the light reflected from the needles seems to dance in harmony with your movement, from one corner to another, from the ceiling to the floor, from left to right… You become uncertain of what appears before you. Everything seems to have been stopped and stuck in time and space, just like they do in photographs. If you stay still long enough, you will be able to see the minimal movement of these “rain drops”, and hear the cabbage as it grows slowly and quietly.



As a mixed-race son of a Vietnamese woman and a Cambodian man, Bopha Xorigia Le Huy Hoang has always used his unique cultural perspectives and experiences as the starting point for his work. He also explores and exposes issues he has to face with, personally, socially and politically.

Năm 2010, Nhasan Studio hân hạnh giới thiệu chương trình “EMERGING ARTISTS PROGRAM – GƯƠNG MẶT MỚI CỦA NGHỆ THUẬT” của với 6 triển lãm cá nhân của Bopha Xorigia Lê Huy Hoàng, Nguyễn Trần Nam, Nguyễn Phương Linh, Lại Diệu Hà, Nguyễn Trinh Thi và Nguyễn Văn Phúc.

6 nghệ sĩ này đã làm việc và chia sẻ với nhau trong những dự án chung và riêng, như 10+, kỉ niệm 10 năm Nhasan studio 2008; Festival nghệ thuật đương đại trẻ tại trường đại học mỹ thuật Việt Nam 2007, Saigon Open City 2006…

Bopha Xorigia Lê Huy Hoàng là người đầu tiên thực hiện triển lãm trong chương trình này với tiêu đề “ Mưa”.

Sau triển lãm cá nhân “Khăn” tại Nhasan studio năm 2009, với “Mưa” lần này Hoàng tiếp tục thử nghiệm chất liệu thiên nhiên, tự nhiên kết hợp với vật liệu kim loại công nghiệp. Anh gieo hạt cải tự nhiên nảy mầm ngay tại không gian trưng bày. Bên trên là một màn mưa giăng kín bời hàng nghìn cây kim châm cứu được treo công phu trên nền chỉ đen. Hoàng muốn thể hiện một quang cảnh bất hợp lí, một sự phát triển lệch lạc không tự nhiên bị gán lên cây cỏ, hạt mầm của sự sống.

Khi bước vào không gian triển lãm, những cây kim châm cứu bắt ánh sáng được treo yên lặng như một quang cảnh tĩnh, một cảnh phim được ấn nút dừng cho bạn nhìn rõ được từng “hạt mưa”. Nếu bạn cũng đứng yên lặng rất lâu trong không gian này, bạn có thể nhìn thấy những cử động rất nhỏ của kim và cảm nhận được những cựa quậy rất im lặng của mầm cây đang nảy.

Bopha Xorigia Lê Huy Hoàng mang trong mình hai dòng máu mẹ là người Việt, cha là người Cambodia và những kỉ niệm không êm đềm về cuộc chiến tranh, cùng những góc khuất nguy hiểm bởi chính trị và hoàn cảnh xuất thân của mình. Anh từng là lính chiến đấu tại chiến trường Cambodia.

Các tác phẩm của Hoàng thể hiện thân phận cá nhân và những câu chuyện quanh cuộc sống của anh.

Chương trình “EMERGING ARTISTS PROGRAM – GƯƠNG MẶT MỚI CỦA NGHỆ THUẬT” được thực hiện với sự tài trợ hào phóng của quỹ trao đổi và phát triển văn hóa của đại sứ quán Đan Mạch CDEF tại Hà Nội.

Nhãn/Longan - solo exhibition by Hoàng Minh Đức

Born and bred in Hung Yen, my childhood is filled with memories of the one thing that makes this place one of the most famous provinces in the North of Vietnam: its delicious and juicy longan. Up until now, I can still recall stories told by my ancestors, about how our longan was especially reserved as a tribute to the kings; along side are games my friends and I used to play underneath the longan trees; as well as baking summer days when we all had to go onto the fields to gather ripened logans. But above all, it is the exceptionally sweet and fragrant taste the logans produce that is most unforgettable. Just like that, the longan has long become a part of who I am and what I do. Not only a vital source of inspiration, it also has consistently been my key medium.

The longan, which literally translates ‘dragon’s eyes’ in Vietnamese, is named so because of the fruit’s resemblance to an eyeball when it is shelled. The seed is of an enamel-like, lacquered black and shows through the translucent flesh like a pupil. Therefore, by joining hundreds of seeds together, I am trying to ask the public to open their ‘eyes’ and minds to one another; to create both a metaphoric and physical bond between themselves, and between them and I; and to ensure that this precious link is forever maintained.

"in transit" - Kimbal Bumstead

"In Transit" is a self organised project by Kimbal Bumstead in which he is making performances as part of an overland travel from Berlin to Bangkok. In the places he goes he makes performances in galleries and also in people's houses. The performances he does all follow the same basic format but change and develop depending on the productivity of the audience. He is aiming to build up a body of work in the form of documentation which will be presented in an exhibition in the UK in October 2009.
Along the way, the audience members present become the characters of a story and during the performance they will contribute to the making of an installation.

The performance is about physical contact with audience members and Kimbal as the performer using the audience as his tools, or props in order to create this installation.
The performance is not directly about anything specifically, its the product of Kimbal's ongoing research into audience participation within performance. It alludes to human issues such as dehumanisation, objectification and power. Each audience and social context leads to a different perception of what the meaning is; this is the main concept of the 'In Transit' Project, as Kimbal physically progresses overland, the concept of the performance is also changing (in transit)."

The actual performance takes different forms but for example, his performance in Beijing involved Kimbal preparing a dinner where one of the audience members was the meat for the dinner. He prepared some sauce to marinade the body of the audience member whom he had stripped and taped onto a table. The rest of the audience were then invited to draw the piece of the body they would like to eat, He then prepared the vegetables in a wok which he poured onto their drawings. The audience received their drawings with meat and vegetables packaged in a plastic bag for them to take away with them. (English perception of chinese take-away food)

Truong Thien - Last Holidays

Last holidays đề cập đến một địa điểm thắng cảnh công cộng nổi tiếng của Huế. Dự án nhằm thu thập và triển lãm trên 5000 bức ảnh chụp được thực hiện từ trước thời điểm tháng 4/2004, khi trung tâm vui chơi đồi Thiên An-hồ Thuỷ Tiên đi vào hoạt động. Các bức ảnh chụp lại các gia đình, bạn bè và các đoàn hội đã từng lên chơi, dã ngoại cắm trại tại không gian này.

Hàng ngàn dự án xây dựng và đầu tư đang được xúc tiến ở Việt nam hàng năm, thúc đẩy một môi trường kinh tế năng động, tạo nhiều việc làm cho người dân, tạo nhiều cơ hội hưởng lợi cho cả người đầu tư lẫn người đang sống ở địa phương được đầu tư. Nhưng cũng có hàng trăm dự án xây dựng đang trở thành những gánh nặng hoặc sai lầm khó có khả năng sửa đổi.

Làm cách nào để gìn giữ, bảo tồn và phát triển các không gian đã một phần tạo nên cảnh quan của từng vùng đất, gắn liền với các đặc trưng truyền thống của nó mà mỗi lần nhắc đến, mọi người sẽ liên tưởng ngay đến những đặc trưng đó. Nhất là ở những thành phố như Huế, và nhất là trong giai đoạn bắt đầu phát triển nhanh và mạnh như hiện nay của kinh tế. Thời điểm hiện tại có thể là mấu chốt cho được và mất trong tương lai của hành động của chúng ta.



The Last Holidays community art project exhibition,
by Truong Thien.LAST HOLIDAYS takes as its subject a well-known beauty spot in Hue, open to the public, that was turned into an entertainment park. The project collects and exhibits more than 500 photographs taken before April 2004 when Thien An – Thuy Tien Lake entertainment center was opened. These photographs were taken by the many families, friends and groups who used to go camping there.

Thousands of construction & investment projects have been promoted in Vietnam every year, impulsing an dynamic economic environment, bringing many employments to people, creating many benefit chances for both investors and local people. However, hundreds of projets carrying out have been burdens or unchangeable mistakes.

How do we maintain , preserve and develop spaces which partly create lanscapes of each land with theirs traditional specific features so that whenever people remind them, everyone thinks of these feature of their lands? especially in Hue, in rapid developing stage of current economy. The current time may be important moment defining our future from our actions.

“A gap between two houses” is directly taken from the technical drawing of the exhibition space (two combined
traditional vietnamese land houses), the artists have received from the gallery.
Seduced by this expression describing a left over space between two walls with no function neither access, but
still being part of the room structure, a starting point for the show was found. A selection of existing and newly
created works for this specific conditions will be presented. The video work “Museum” by Karine Fauchard
creates a fictional art museum where the exponates are shells, exhibited in their natural environment, a sand
consisting of millions of similar shells. This video work is the result of an improvisation and could be read as an
ironic metaphore of how the art world is functioning. For another work, “The fridge exhibition”, Lazar Lyutakov
invited artists from the viennese art scene aswell as local artists from Hanoi to participate in a group exhibition
taking place in a switched on household fridge.

"Khe hở giữa 2 ngôi nhà" được lấy thẳng từ bản vẽ sơ đồ không gian triển lãm (2 ngôi nhà truyền thống Việt Nam nối với nhau) mà các nghệ sỹ nhận được từ Nhasan Studio.
Bị cuốn hút và ấn tượng với khoảng hở giữa 2 bức tường không có đường vào bên trong nhưng vẫn thuộc cấu trúc của căn phòng, điểm bắt đầu của triển lãm đã được tìm ra. Một số tác phẩm cả cũ, cả mới được lựa chọn giành cho không gian này sẽ được trưng bày. Tác phẩm Video "Museum" của Karine Fauchard tạo ra một bảo tàng hư cấu, nơi đó hiện vật là những vỏ sò, được trưng bày trong môi trường tự nhiên, lẫn trong cát với hàng triệu vỏ sò giống nhau nữa. Tác phẩm video này là một kết quả làm việc ngẫu hứng, được xem như một sự ẩn dụ châm biếm về chức năng của thế giới nghệ thuật ra sao.

Một tác phẩm khác: "triển lãm tủ lạnh" của Lazar Lyutakov. Anh đã mời những nghệ sỹ từ Vienne, cũng như các nghệ sỹ điạ phương tại Hà Nội để tham gia vào triển lãm nhóm được trưng bày bên trong tủ lạnh.

Mọi vật sinh ra đều có nguồn gốc căn nguyên của mình?. Cũng chỉ chính tạo vật đó mới hiểu được mình nhất,..Việc nói về mình cũng là một nhu cầu chia sẻ rất đỗi tự nhiên của con người.

Bố tôi, một người Campuchia, tập kết ra Hà Nội là một bác sĩ quân đội từng công tác tại viện 103 Hà Đông trước năm 1970. Sau này ông bị giết chết bởi nạn diệt chủng cuả Polpot nhằm bài trừ tận gốc những thành phần thân với người Việt.

Mẹ tôi, một phụ nữ Việt Nam, là cô giáo từng dạy học tại trường con em những người miền nam tập kết ra bắc trong chiến tranh.

Tôi mang trong mình hai dòng máu và một kỷ niệm không êm đềm về cuộc chiến tranh, cùng với những góc khuất nguy hiểm bởi chính trị và chính hoàn cảnh xuất thân cuả mình. Trước khi đến với nghệ thuật tôi cũng đã từng là người lính chiến đấu tại chiến trường Campuchia ,nên cũng hiểu được phần nào về nó.


Tác phẩm "KHĂN" cũng chính là tâm sự một phần nào về chính thân phận cuả bản thân tôi. Đó chính là một sự pha trộn trong tâm hồn cũng như sự chung chiêng trong cuộc sống đời thường.

Tác phẩm được dùng chất liệu bã cafe tôi xin ở một quán cạnh nhà, biểu thị cho góc khuất cuả chiến tranh và chính trị đè lên thân phận cuả tôi.

Phần đường thốt nốt được chuyển từ campuchia cùng đường trắng cuả Việt Nam là những chất liệu thường dùng hàng ngày trong đời thường cuả hai đất nước được biểu thị cho văn hoá cuả hai dân tộc vẫn ngọt ngào chảy trong tôi.



Everything was born having its own originality and reason. And only that creature can understand itself the most. To talk about oneself is a very natural act for the need of sharing of human beings.

My father, a Cambodian, who assembled in Hanoi was a military doctor working at 103 hospital Ha Dong before 1970. Later he was killed by the Pol Pot to exterminate Cambodians who was close with Vietnamese.

My mother, a Vietnamese woman, was a teacher at the school for children from Southern families assembled in the North of Vietnam during the war.

I’ve carried with me two different blood and an unpleasant memory about the war with the dangerous hidden angle of politics and my background. Before engaging in art, I was a soldier fighting at Cambodia battlefield so I understand part of its story.

The piece “ SCARF” is a part of my story and my own life being told. It’s the mixture within the soul and the unstability of everyday life.

The piece made of coffee residue I got in a shop near my place which stands for the hidden angle of war and politics pressed on me.

The jaggery part brought from Cambodia together with the white sugar of Vietnam were the two everyday materials of the two countries stands for different cultures of two nations still running sweetly inside me.

Lưu động

Tôi đặt bốn nghệ sĩ Hà Nội vẽ lại chân dung bước chân của mình. Tôi đưa cho mỗi họa sĩ ( Nguyễn Quốc Hùng, Nguyễn Nam Đồng, Nguyễn Cao Thắng và Nguyễn Tất Long ) cùng một bức ảnh bước chân tôi đang đi bộ. Tôi khuyến khích họ sử dụng phóng túng tính cá nhân nghệ sĩ trong việc thể hiện tác phẩm.

Hà Nội có rất nhiều việc kinh doanh đặc biệt bằng việc sao chép những bản copy từ những tác phẩm nguyên gốc. Tôi đưa mỗi bức tranh gốc được hoàn thành tới bốn người thợ làm việc kinh doanh trong lĩnh vực “sao chép tranh từ những tác phẩm của các nghệ sĩ gạo cội trên thế giới”. Tôi yêu cầu những người thợ đầu tiên copy lại bốn bức tranh gốc mà tôi đưa họ. Sau đó tôi lại yêu cầu người chủ mỗi cửa hàng copy lại lần nữa từ chính bức tranh mà họ đã copy từ mỗi họa sĩ gốc. Bức tranh copy thứ hai sau đó lại được tái sản xuất bằng một thợ chép tranh khác nữa. Tôi tiếp tục quá trình này đến khi tất cả năm bản copy được hoàn thành. Bản copy thứ năm, trên thực tế, là bản copy của bản copy của bản copy của bản copy của bức tranh gốc.

Bản “copy” xác nhận ý nghĩa quan trọng của “bản gốc” và đồng thời có ý nghĩa rằng vẻ bể ngoài của tác phẩm không được ghi nhận là quan trọng nếu không được sao chép lại. Trình bày như một nhóm cùng nhau với những bức tranh gốc, đôi chân tôi như được hoạt họa. Tôi đi.


Ambulatory

I asked four Hanoi artists to paint a portrait of my feet. Each artist (Nguyen Quoc Hung, Nguyen Nam Dong, Nguyen Cao Thang, and Nguyen Tat Long) was given the same photo of my feet walking. I encouraged each of them to use their own artistic license in the interpretation of the subject.

Hanoi has many businesses that specialize in re-creating copies of highly regarded original paintings. I took each of the finished feet portraits to four different Hanoi businesses that specialize in the “reproduction of the world’s masterpieces” I asked the owner to have a copy made of one of the original I gave them. Subsequently, I directed the owner of each shop to have the copy they had made reproduced by a different copy artists that they employ. The second copy was then reproduced by yet another one of their copy artists I continued this process until a total of five copies were made. The fifth copy was, in fact, a copy of the copy of the copy of the copy of the original.

The “copy” asserts the significant importance of the “original” and at the same time implies that an aspect of its full potential is not realized without it being reproduced. Displayed as a group together with the original paintings, my feet are animated. I walk

Tôi sống cùng câu hỏi “Chúng ta được liên kết với nhau như thế nào và trong những hình dáng hay kiểu mẫu nào?”. Tất cả chúng ta đểu thở, việc này đã không ai để ý như một thứ liên kết chúng ta lại. Tỏa ra, đi tìm để tạo dựng một diện mạo chưa được hiển thị tại nơi ta gặp nhau, hiện hữu.

Sau bốn tuần, tôi thu lượm được hơi thở của hơn 250 người Hà Nội. Mỗi người đóng góp thổi đầy một quả bóng bằng hơi thở tỏa ra của mình. Những cá nhân đóng góp hới thở là những thành viên của nhiều nhóm cộng đồng khác nhau tại Hà Nội, bao gồm nhóm Action for the City, nhiều nhóm họa sĩ, Nha San Studio, và những người sống và làm việc ở giữa con đường nơi tôi cư trú tại phố Thụy Khuê và Nha San Studio.

Emanation

I live with the question “How are we connected and what forms or patterns does it create?” We all breathe, yet this goes unnoticed as something that connects us. Emanation, seeks to make an unseen aspect of where we meet, visible.

Over the course of four weeks, I collected the breath of over 250 Hanoi residents. Each contributor filled a balloon with their exhaled breath. The individuals who contributed their breath are members of a variety of community groups in Hanoi including Action for the City, various artist groups, Nha San Studio, and the people who live and work between where I have been living on Duong Thuy Khue and Nha San Studio.

The tied together collection of breath is in the form of a column, echoing the traditional stilts of the time-honored form of vernacular Vietnamese architecture in which Emanation has been installed.

Artists that used to work and are working with Nhasan studio are increasing more and more. The first generation of Vietnamese avant-garde artists as Truong Tan, Tran Luong, Nguyen Minh Thanh… have created the prestigious beginning. It became a valuable start for the next generations to develop the culture scence.
“10+” is a special event to celebrate 10th anniversary of Nhasan-studio. This intergenerational event got strongly support from CDEF (Cultureal Development Echange Fund - Royal Danish Embassy) including 20 Vietnamese and foreigner contemporary artists.
